Turbine Water Passage Inspection
Bradley Engineering Ltd. has developed technology and procedures for inspecting critical elements throughout the turbine water passage, from tail race to intake, in the form of high resolution 3D models. The size of a water passage often makes it challenging to gain close access to the entire surface. The models allow for detailed inspection from an office environment without the need to install time consuming support structures, such as scaffolding. The models also provide a permanent and accurate record that are accessible to all parties and inspection specialists. Model resolution is adaptable and chosen based on the type of deterioration being documented. The typical rage is 0.25 mm to 0.75 mm and allows for very detailed visual and spatial analysis.
High Resolution Images and Orthomosaics
Individual images provide fine details although their location is often difficult to relate back to the area that was scanned. Orthomosaics combine fine details and provide context for their position within the area. Individual images and orthomosaics complement each other in assessing condition and performing a comprehensive inspection. In addition to the 2D imagery, 3D walkthroughs can be generated as either pre-generated animations or as full user control navigation, allowing users to freely explore the model.
Shading to Emphasize Deterioration
Deterioration can often be difficult to visualize in the coloured imagery due to the lack of variation in colour and contrast to the surrounding area. Imagery can be shaded to emphasize deterioration, making it easier to identify and assess condition.
Change Detection
The power of the high resolution 3D models lies in their precision and ability to compare with a previous baseline model. Changes can be visualized as a colourization of the model for an intuitive and comprehensive assessment. Repeat models as part of a monitoring program can instil confidence in condition and deterioration trends, and potentially reduce inspection frequency requirements.
